Room 511, Wednesday Night

Francine had, believe it or not, found a distraction from freaking out over Homecoming Weekend: freaking out over Parents Weekend.

Which was why, though there was a stack of library books (this time non-kitteny)at the foot of her bed, what she could currently be found reading was her much-creased copy of today's FH Times. Memorizing how to say "I have never heard of this Katchoo person" in Al Bhed? Maaaaaaaybe.

"Spazzing?" Firekeeper frowned. Blind Seer, meanwhile, wandered in and made himself comfortable on a spot on the floor.

"Freaking out?" Francine tried. She pointed to a clear spot on her bed, beside the books. "My mom is... really not gonna understand this place."

Firekeeper sat next to the books, eyeing them warily. "Am not understanding this place much either."

Francine couldn't help laughing at that, despite her nerves. "Well no, me neither. But I like it. ...Most days. I'm not sure my Mom will see it that way." She dropped the newspaper on the bed and reached out for one of the books.

"I would think she would be pleased to see you happy," Firekeeper said.

Francine paused, her thumb worrying the spine of Romulus and Remus: A History of Rome. "Yeah. But sometimes she overdoes it on what she thinks I need to do to be happy. Or safe, or whatever."

"Still think she treat you too much like wolves is treating puppies," Firekeeper grumbled.

"At least she doesn't make me sit on her lap and eat liver snaps?" Francine offered with a small giggle.

Firekeeper let out a snort of laughter. "Is that, at least," she conceded.

Francine smiled and lifted the book, whose cover sported a woodcut-type picture of two little boys leaning against a giant she-wolf. "Did you want to read about wolf-puppy-kids who founded a city?"

"Where they find it?" Firekeeper asked, misinterpreting Francine's question. "And how is one losing a city?"

Francine tried hard not to laugh, but didn't really succeed. "No, founded like... started? So I guess they did find it kind of. They picked the place to build it."

"Oh," Firekeeper nodded. She didn't really understand what wolves would need a city for, but wasn't about to mention that. "Would like to read, then."

Francine flipped it open to the first chapter - not that you could really call them chapters, since it was a child's history of Rome, and there were possibly more pictures than words.

"Okay, that one's.... interesting." In a graphic are you sure this book is for kids way.

Firekeeper shrugged. "Is how puppies is eating before they is old enough for meat," she said matter-of-factly.

"True." Francine eyed the babies. "Though I don't think they can stand up like that when they're that young."

"Am not knowing much about human puppies," Firekeeper admitted. "Sapphire let me hold Sun, once, but only for a short time before she take him back. She not say, but I think maybe she is afraid I drop him."

"I've babysat a lot," Francine told her. "They're pretty wobbly and fall-downy at that age. One, two, three, plop!"

"...You sit on babies?"

Francine stared at her for a second, then burst into laughter. "No. It means to watch them, like if their parents have to go somewhere?"

Well, that, Firekeeper did all the time with the pups. "Then why is called sitting?"

Good question, or at least not one Francine had ever given any thought to. "Huh. I guess 'cause you sit with them? At least with little babies, since there's not much else they can do."

Firekeeper snorted. "Humans is so strange."

"Just a little," Francine agreed. "We call it babysitting even when the kids aren't babies anymore, too, so... yeah." She snickered. "Sometimes when they're four or five and hopped up on sugar you might want to sit on them, though."

"Their teeth probably hurts less when they learn to bite," Firekeeper offered.

Francine snorted. "Hurts them less, maybe!"

"Am thinking wolf fangs hurt more," Firekeeper pointed out, holding out one rather scarred arm for Francine to see.

Francine's intake of breath didn't take wolf-hearing to notice. "Ohmidgod whoa."
