Room 505: Tuesday morning before classes

Despite this being her day of classes, Francine was still finding it a relaxing one compared to last week. Besides, she didn't have class for another hour or so. She could totally hang out on her bed, read the interview with Gwen DeMarco in the latest issue of Starlog magazine and... playwiththedroidbaby Hush.

"....You're a big giant dork, and I love you," Francine felt the need to point out, just in case he wasn't aware.

"Well, you're so good with children!"

Francine grinned. "Well. Robot ones, maybe."

"And real ones."

"Maybe. It'd be nice." Francine drew her knees up on the bed (which yes, was now one big bed, so there was in fact plenty of room) to rest her arms on them. "Not in-vitro thingy, though - that's where they use test tubes and stuff, and it's mostly for women that have trouble having children, or if a surrogate mom is going to carry somebody else's baby for them. I think you're thinking of, um." See, when it involves turkey basters instead of petri dishes, then you get um. "Artificial insemination."

"...how is that different?"

Come Thursday, Francine would so wish she'd had this conversation while she was stoned on Wednesday.

"Um. The first one, they actually make a baby in a laboratory and then they put it inside the woman."

Stoned and drunk would be good.

"The other one is just...." And maybe unconscious. "It's like the normal way, with a man and a woman, except you don't have sex."

"...ohhhh." Merlin nodded slowly, accepting that answer. "Then do that!"

"Maybe," Francine found herself repeating, still kind of wishing she were drunk. "Someday. It's kind of weird, though. It's like ... women go to these places and pick some guy without knowing him, just a bunch of stuff like how tall he is and what color hair and whether he went to college, and then they have a baby with some stranger who they never even meet."

"Why wouldn't they pick someone they know?"

This is what happens when you get someone who doesn't know all that much about the science and legalities of sperm donation but has watched far too many Lifetime Network movies.

You get "I guess some people do? But there has to be somebody you can trust not to change their mind six months later and say they want to have custody of your kid. And even if you do, they might not be willing to do it. It's kind of a huge favor to ask, to have a child but not get to be their parent. It's not like hey can I borrow a pencil."

"...I suppose." Merlin sighed anyway. "I think it's a bit more simple back home."

"Get married and have babies with your husband?" Francine guessed. "I mean, that's what most people do here. That's what I grew up wanting to do."
