Francine wasn't the Best. Student. Ever. but when she'd offered to help Blysse find out more about raised-by-wolves stories, she'd made sure to follow through on that, even if it had taken her awhile to get around to finding the books she remembered and inviting Blysse oh so handwavily over.

Of course, the follow-through got a little snagged when she opened up her bookbag while waiting for Blysse to arrive and instead of the library books she'd checked out, found a pile of playfully growling kittens.

Okay, that was gonna take some explaining.

"Well, we feed her from the table sometimes, but we're not really s'posed to," Francine replied. "Mom says it's not good for her." Usually right before turning around and slipping the dog a piece of bacon.

"Humans is very strange," Firekeeper observed, with a shake of her head.

Francine laughed. "You can say that again."

"Humans is very strange," Firekeeper repeated, uncertain as to why she was doing so.

Which incited another bout of giggles. When that was out of the way, Francine said, "That just means you're right. Humans is... are... very strange."

"Am glad you is thinking so, too," Firekeeper said. She was quiet for a moment or two, biting her lip thoughtfully, before she spoke again. "Francine?"

Francine set the kitten down on her lap, and watched it immediately scramble off to start back down the road to Grandma's house again. "Yuh-huh?"

"You taked out books for me," Firekeeper said. "And even though they is ending up kittens, this is still a nice thing. A friend thing. You should be calling me Firekeeper. It is wolf name. For friends."

"Fire...keeper?" Francine repeated slowly, then flashed a bright smile. "That's neat. I've only got the one name. Well, sometimes people call me Francie." It didn't seem like a very Blysse... a very Firekeeper kind of word, though.

"Is name wolves gived me, because I can make fires," she explained, touching the small pouch she wore around her neck that contained her fire-making tools. "When Earl Kestrel find me, he not know my wolf name, so gived me name Blysse. He is kind to me, so I not mind so much." It was a bit more complicated than that, of course, but her explanation was already more long-winded than usual for her, and so she didn't elaborate.

"How long ago was that?" Francine asked curiously.

"Two turning of seasons ago, he bringed me into Hawk Haven," Firekeeper said.

Francine took a moment to puzzle that out. "So two years ago. What's Hawk Haven? Is that a city?" Or, for all she knew, a bird sanctuary.

"Is land ruled by human One, King Tedric," Firekeeper explained.

"A king. So it's a country," Francine said. "You lived outside it when you lived with the wolves?"

Firekeeper nodded. "Humans is forbidden to cross into Iron Mountains."

"Your parents must have, though, right?" Francine asked thoughtfully. "I mean, your, you know, your human parents."

"Did," Firekeeper nodded.

"So were they explorers or something?" Francine blushed when it dawned on her how nosy she was being. "Sorry, I'm all pokey and it's none of my business. Your life just sounds a lot more interesting than "raised-in-Houston, my mom bakes a lot of muffins."

Firekeeper was about to answer Francine's question, but-

"Thought dog was Muffins?"

Francine blinked. "She i-- oh! Not that kind of muffins! Bready cakey kind of muffins that you eat. No baking puppies!"

"Good," Firekeeper said emphatically. "Am glad your thinking is such." Wolves were rather protective of puppies.

"The dog is sort of named after the food," she explained, not unaware of how dorky it sounded. "Because they're both little and sweet."

"Like wolf names, in a way," Firekeeper said. Though no wolf would be caught dead with a name like 'Muffins'. "Wolf names is... Shining Coat. Whiner. Blind Seer. One-Ear. Because wolf is like name."
