Francine wasn't the Best. Student. Ever. but when she'd offered to help Blysse find out more about raised-by-wolves stories, she'd made sure to follow through on that, even if it had taken her awhile to get around to finding the books she remembered and inviting Blysse oh so handwavily over.

Of course, the follow-through got a little snagged when she opened up her bookbag while waiting for Blysse to arrive and instead of the library books she'd checked out, found a pile of playfully growling kittens.

Okay, that was gonna take some explaining.

Well, at least it knew she was higher-ranked than it was, she'd give the kitten that.

"Why is that one wearing clothes?" she asked, pointing to the cloaked one. No Beast she'd ever met had done so... except for herself, of course.

"It's dressed like Weetiny Scarlet Cape," Francine said, not at all managing to avoid making eeeeeekitty noises at it. "That's one of the stories in the fairy tale book."

"Fairy tale?" Firekeeper asked, absently reaching out to scritch behind the ears of the kitten who'd rarrr'ed at her.

It batted lightly at her fingers, but didn't exactly put up a fight.

"Fairy tales? They're stories for kids. Like, old folk legends about magic and stuff?"

Firekeeper nodded. "Humans where I am from is having such," she said. "Queen Elexa telled of dragons."

"We have some of those too." Francine nodded back. "Weetiny Scarlet Cape's about a girl and a wolf, though."

Firekeeper watched the scarlet-cape kitten, and the one following it, curiously. "Is one following it supposed to be wolf-kitten?" she tried not to think about how absurd the idea of a wolf-kitten was.

"Rowwwwwr!" said the one following. The caped one took a peek over its shoulder, then kept walking along the carpet. But a little faster now.

"I think that's what he thinks he is," Francine replied with a snicker.

"If cat was raised in wolf pack, it would be such," Firekeeper pointed out.

Francine couldn't argue with that, exactly. "It'd be a really tiny wolf, though."

And Firekeeper couldn't argue with that. She shrugged. "Would not be only wolf with strange shape," she said with a small smile.

The wolf-kitten who'd been stalking Weetiny Scarlet Cape apparently couldn't stay completely in character long enough to get to Grandma's house, because as the caped kitten neared Francine's toes, the wolf-kitten pounced on it, tackling and rolling.

"Hey, play nice," Francine said, reaching down to try to separate them.

"Wolves is not playing nice," Firekeeper laughed.

"She's not a wolf," Francine said, picking up the little orange kitten in the red cape. "And in the story the wolf tries to gobble her up." Francine shook her finger at the wolf-kitten. "No gobbling!"

"She is human, in story?" Firekeeper asked.

Francine nodded. "She's a little girl walking through the woods on a trip to her grandmother's house to take her some food."

"Humans is not for eating," Firekeeper frowned.

"Some wolves here do, though. Or they did, I guess," Francine amended as the hooded kitten nipped at her fingers. "It's a really old story; most people don't live out in the woods now, and they sure wouldn't send a little kid walking alone in them if they did."

"Doing so is not safe," Firekeeper agreed. "Wolves is never sending pups to danger on purpose."

Francine nodded. "I always thought the mom in that story was really dumb, even when I was little. My mom, I had to talk her into even letting me stay here."

"Here?" Firekeeper snorted. "What unsafe about here?" Spoken like someone who'd never really lived anywhere that could truly be considered 'safe'.

"Well, the Vice Principal tried to take over the island and attacked everybody with monsters once?" Francine offered. "Not that I told my mom about that. Mostly she just cares that I'm not there."

"Monsters... is not safe," Firekeeper admitted grudgingly. "But you is no longer puppy, and cannot stay with your birth-pack forever."

"I'm not--" Francine stopped when she realized that to Blysse, calling somebody a puppy wouldn't exactly be an insult. "I mean, no. Heh. I'm not." She lifted the orange kitten up and rubbed its tummy, despite its protests at being flipped onto its back. "We've got one of those already. Her name's Muffins."
